The SegmentController is a low-current, direct-current (DC) system that can only be operated with a 5V DC power supply. The 5V power supply is enough to drive small motors, servos and LEDs. And it is also an ideal solution for not having to deliver different voltages to devices. Everything goes with the same 5V that we use to power the Master Panel.

In order to reduce the number of wires, only the Master Panel needs to be supplied with power, it supplies power to the additional panels connected to it. Experience shows that a Master Panel with 4-5 additional panels does not permanently consume more than 400mA. By the way, MasterPanel can also measure the current and highest (peak) consumption of its own panels and those connected to it. This can also be seen on the web interface.

Only rarely is it necessary to:

  • In addition to the current transmitted on the bus line, a separate 5V supply must be provided.
  • A voltage other than 5V can also be switched with a relay, for example.

What can I choose from?

In the early days, the 5V system could also be served by a phone charger. In this case, it should be noted that the charger is not in FastCharging (PD or QC) mode, but can output a constant default of 5V with at least 1A.

Later, when you use more SegmentControllers, you’re better off with a professional power supply that can handle 2-4 or even 8A. For example, a Mean Well power supply (that does not yet have a cooling fan) is ideal for the purpose.
